What a tandem flight really feels like

You arrive, you are given a harness and a helmet, you walk three steps and you fly. Here is the whole morning, told in order, so that nothing is a surprise.

You are a passenger, not a student

A tandem wing is one single wing built and certified for two people. Two harnesses hang from it: the pilot sits behind, you sit in front with the whole view for yourself. The pilot holds the brakes, chooses the line, the speed and the moment to land.

You do not need to train, to carry anything or to know anything about the wind. You only need closed shoes and a little courage for the first ten seconds.

Before you take off

We meet at Aguergour, a Berber village in the hills of Ouzguita. From there the road stops being a road, so a 4x4 takes you up to the take-off area in about fifteen minutes.

At the top the pilot opens the wing on the grass, checks the lines one by one, then fits your harness and your helmet. He explains the only three things you need: stand up straight, walk forward, and keep walking until your feet leave the ground.

The take-off: three steps

The pilot waits for a clean cycle of wind. The wing rises above you, he checks it, then you both walk down the slope. After two or three steps the harness takes your weight and you sit down as if in a chair.

There is no jump and no free fall. That is the part most people get wrong before they come.

In the air

The noise stops. You fly along the ridge, then out over the plain with Lalla Takerkoust lake on your right and the High Atlas behind. On a clear day you can see the snow line in winter and the red roofs of the villages below.

If you like it calm, the pilot flies straight. If you want more, ask for a few turns at the end. Nothing happens that you have not asked for.

The landing

We land on the slope below the take-off, into the wind. The pilot will tell you to stand up a few seconds before touching the ground, and you walk out of it. Most passengers land without even feeling a shock.

Then we pack the wing, drive back down, and you leave with your photos and videos if you chose that option.
